Recap: Wings Over the Prairie Festival

Wings Over the Prairie Festival

In its 76′th year the Wings over the Prairie Festival carries on its rich southern delta tradition. It is one of the oldest festivals in Arkansas. The first National Duck Calling Contest was held in 1936. The festival kicks off the 60 day duck season in Arkansas. This sleepy town of about 9,000 offers some of the best duck hunting in the world. The likes of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Vice President Dick Cheney have been known to make the trek to the “Duck hunting capitol of the World” – Stuttgart. The festival estimates about 15,000 to 20,000 people come out to the weeklong event. The main attraction is the duck calling contest.

How to Truly ‘Unplug’ from Everyday Life

If you want to get away from everything, get on a fishing boat. I don’t mean float down the river with your smartphone in a waterproof box. I don’t mean camping where you can hike back to your car and listen to a football game on the way home. I mean Bering Sea or Gulf of Alaska. If you want to get in some fly fishing, I would recommend leaving from the tiny, no cell coverage town of Yakutat. It is home base for the Situk River.

Chimera 100k

On Saturday, November 19th, at first light, the Chimera 100K began. The day started out overcast, and slightly chilly. It was perfect running weather. I had a goal for the day to break the top time on the course of 14 hours and 20 minutes. My plan was simple: start out easy and just keep a steady pace throughout the race. At the end of the first 10 miles I was sitting in about 19th place and felt good with that knowing that others may have started out fast.
