Hell Yeah Tour! On the Road

Hell Yeah! Tour Rolls through Asheville, NC

For a few days, the Hell Yeah! Tour rallied through Asheville, NC to visit with some of our friends and to see the sights. One of our main partners, Diamond Brand Outdoors, had us over Saturday evening and invited us to a paddlefest at Lake Julian the next day. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Lake Julian, here’s a quick history. In 1964, Carolina Power and Light developed a coal-fired power plant situated on the shore of Lake Julian. Over the years, the plant grew, made moves to become cleaner like decommissioning outdated coal stacks, but in May of 2015 was found guilty of illegally discharging pollution from coal ash. As a result, the plant will be torn down within the next two to three years and replaced by a natural gas power plant, which will be cleaner and more productive. Good news for Asheville, Lake Julian, and for all who enjoy the beautiful natural space that it defiantly remains in spite of the smokestacks along its banks.

After a paddling with the crew at Lake Julian, we took a turn towards Fletcher to visit the crew at Sierra Nevada. The Werner Paddles rep, Paige, who we’d met that morning at the paddlefest, described the brewery as Hogwarts. Her description matches it perfectly. Whether you’re a fan of the Harry Potter books or you’re not, there is no denying the magic this brewery emanates. It is beautiful and stoic, new yet timeless. With high ceilings, shiny metal brewing equipment at every corner, wonderful smells of every variety, it is an experience palpable and visceral. Go there. Period. While you’re there, check out the gift shop and get a Mountain Khakis shirt embroidered with the Sierra Nevada logo.

If you enjoy camping, keep heading south and check out the campground off country road 1345 outside of Fletcher, NC. It’s called the North Mills Recreation Area and it is awesome. Bring three things: a Stanley growler full of Sierra Nevada brew, your fly rod, and a hammock. This is the perfect place for the HYT crew to relax after a busy few days spent with friends in the Asheville area. See you out there!
