An Unconventional Kind of Climbing

The Tucson Postpartum Depression Coalition (TPDC) and Mountain Khakis joined forces to host the 2017 Climb out of the Darkness Walk in the midst of a heat-wave this past weekend. Families and friends of women who have suffered from perinatal mood disorders, including postpartum depression (PPD), gathered at sunset in a parking lot just off of the city’s largest community hospital to show their support.

As the Arizona heat-wave finally passed at 7pm, the TPDC organizer shared a few words about her experience as a new mother that suffered from PPD, and then the walk began. It was a 1.5 mile loop around the hospital, with various volunteers spraying water bottles as misters and blowing bubbles as we approached the finish line. Encouraging words were scribbled on the sidewalk like small messages of happiness to symbolically push aside sadness and depression, and there was a big cheer when we reached the end. Thanks to TPDC for creating awareness around such an important part of a mother’s journey, and thanks to Mountain Khakis for your continued support in the community!
