Grand-Further 25km Mountain Run

Tanawha Adventures and Grandfather Mountain State Park in the High Country of Western North Carolina hosted the inaugural Grand-Further 25km Mountain Run on a foggy day in August. 150 runners battled it out over 15 miles and 4,200 feet of elevation gain up and over Grandfather Mountain. The race began and ended at the  newly completed Profile Trail Parking Lot and Trailhead. From there runners climbed the mountain via the Profile Trail and descended the other side on the Daniel Boone Scout Trail all the way down to the Blue Ridge Parkway. At this point the course made a small loop and then proceeded back the way it came all the way back up to Calloway Peak and back down the Profile Trail. Grandfather Mountain is somewhat unique in the Southern Appalachians because of its rugged ridge line composed primarily of exposed solid granite and stunted Fraser Firs clinging on through ceaseless wind for dear life. To put it into perspective, fixed ropes and ladders are found in multiple areas of the trail! To the unknowing eye one would easily mistake it for a peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Even though this was the first year for the event, all 150 open spots in the race filled up and sold out in under two hours! The Grand-Further Mountain Run is sure to become a WNC classic trail race.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Friends of High Country State Parks Group.

This years winners were Brandon Smith with a time of 2:26 and Sara Molskness in 3:07.

Big thanks goes out to all of this years sponsors including Mountain Khakis, Fitsok, Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Vertical Runner of Black Mountain, and Mountain Grounds.
