Despite days of rain, including the day of the race, and a resulting course that was equal parts epic mud and gnarly rocks, 74 men, 11 women, and 15 kids took part in the Blackwater Classic mountain bike race in Davis, West Virginia on May 29, 2016, which is part series of cross country mountain bike races in the area.
Based on age group and expertise, riders completed various combinations of loops to conquer the ride. Every group had to tackle a tough course that was made only more tricky by intense mud that was knee deep in places if you chose the wrong line.
The more advanced groups tackled the infamous Moon Rocks, a unique, steep rock outcropping that occurs around the half-way mark for the big loop. From that point on, the riders steadily climb up and then descend down Brown Mountain. They wind along technical singletrack with several rock gardens along the way for the rest of the loop.
Among many sponsors, the race was grateful to have Mountain Khakis as a big sponsor this year, providing gift cards for awards and a rainbow trout belt for a raffle prize.
Thank you, MK, for helping us to make the best of a rainy day doing what we love!
