The Mitre – A Swing and a Miss…

With a weather forecast of blue skies and warm temps we decided it was time to climb a Canadian Rockies classic – “The Mitre” is a classic Alpine 5.5 route with over a 3800’+/- ascent day. With our 4am start and hiking by headlamp we quickly traversed the majestic Lake Louise, crossed a large Lefroy glacier and soon were climbing the 40 degree snow and ice ramp leading us to the rock climbing by first dawn. After last weeks’ snowstorm, we marvelled at our luck of having snow on the icy ramp – perfect for fast travel, as it turns out the snow would prove to be our friend.. and foe.

Mountain Khakis Bouldering

Mountain Khakis Bouldering

The bouldering in California is superb.  Since I was in LA for a week in summer I thought that it would be a good idea to check out Horse Flats since it is at 5000ft elevation.  As it turned out the weather was great.  The temps were in the 80′s and in the shade, with the cool breeze, it was more like 70.  I have to say that Horse Flats is a really beautiful place.  There is not an obscene amount of boulders, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality.  The rock is granite and the moves are powerful.  To me granite is only second to southern sandstone.  And powerful moves really make me want to crank hard.

Summer Vacation in New England

Summer Vacation in New England

Every summer, our rambunctious family with 4 kids, 10 years-old and younger, takes off in search of a fun vacation. This summer, instead of heading to a prescribed beach or edited destination, our family decided to take a rambling, unscripted journey through New England. We began our two-week journey with a drive from Pennsylvania to eastern Vermont. The views of Vermont were spectacular and lived up to everything that I had heard about them. We hiked and camped along the shores of the Connecticut River the first night. Our kids love hiking in the mountains almost as much as sleeping in a tent! Our son Alex even mentioned that he would rather hike in the mountains than swim at the beach.

An End to Summer

An End to Summer

It seams to me that Labor day weekend signifies the beginning of the end of Summer. That’s not to say it wont be downright hot again, or that there wont be another bar-b-que. It does seam, in my mind anyway, that there is a passing of sorts. A transition that can be ignored but not escaped. I don’t need to be told, “it’s Labor Day weekend, better have a bar-b-que, kids are all gonna be back in school, etc.” to see or feel the changing seasons. Just last week I noticed a few things. It seams that the cattle don’t look up at me when I jog past them on our little dirt road, unlike in the spring, when I felt almost guilty for disrupting them even though there was a fence between us. The grasshoppers also have lost the vigor. In mid-summer they scared me almost as much as I must of scared them, feverishly jumping out of my way. Now, they sit docile, plump, and happy on the warm gravel of our driveway. Its almost as if they have come to realize their summer is coming to an end, and they would rather just sit there and enjoy the last of it.
