Just released: 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Albuquerque – 2nd edition

New Mexico set new records in heat, cold, floods, and forest fires last year, but that didn’t stop me and my MKs from hitting nearly a hundred trails to compile the second edition of ’60 Hikes ABQ’. Pick it up if you’re heading out this way. www.restlesstribes.com/60updates Or if you’re looking to hike elsewhere, six other cities got 2012 updates in the ’60 Hikes within 60 Miles’ series by Menasha Ridge Press, including Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City. www.menasharidge.com

Hangin’ With the PPA!”

Hangin’ With the PPA!”

A couple of weeks ago I got a phone call from Don Roberts, owner of Front Royal Canoe and Chairman of the Professional Paddlesports Association, who was hoping that I would be able to run down to Florida for a few days and teach a class for the PPA’s Business School. “Of course I can!” So after working out a little wiggle room in my schedule and packing my bags, I hit the asphalt and set the GPS for this year’s host location, Adventures Unlimited in Milton, FL.

Unlocked

Every area that I have been to over the past 14 years climbing has its gems. Every once in awhile those gems turn out to be difficult and beautiful. In central Pennsylvania at one of my local crags Governor Stables, we have been trying to unlock the beta to one of the proudest boulders in the field for almost half a decade. People have come through looking at this horizontal roof devoid of holds near the lip and tried countless ways to figure out how to gain the head wall and finish the boulder to the top.

Need a Blade Handy?

Ok, here’s the deal; if your lifestyle is of such a nature that you never need a knife…You probably don’t need pants either. On the other hand, if you are like most humans, you gotta have a blade handy. For those of us that like to cut our way through life, it’s nice to have a pair of pants that acknowledges our lifestyle, with special pockets that know how to get along with sharp things as much as we do. The Sharkstooth

The Sharkstooth

The snow lies deep now in the Rocky Mountains, but my memories of my last climb in the high alpine before winter, are strong. It’s hard to forget such a classic as the Sharkstooth. First sight of the aptly named rocky spire in the Cathedral group just west of the Continental Divide, was enough to stop me in my tracks and stand in awe at its silhouette piercing the sky. Upon closer inspection the formation is less intimidating and yields sustained and steep but moderate climbing on solid rock soaring for almost 1,000 feet.
